What's in the box
The kit includes the fabric sock itself (in two sizes covering roughly newborn to 18 months, with a third size sold separately for toddlers), a small sensor unit that clips onto the sock and clicks into a charging base, and a base station that plugs into a wall outlet within Bluetooth range of the crib. Living with it for ten weeks
Night to night, the Dream Sock mostly disappeared into the background, which is the best thing we can say about a piece of baby gear. The base station glows green when readings are in the expected range and shifts to a different color with an audible alert if either heart rate or oxygen drifts outside the configured thresholds. We had exactly three real alerts over ten weeks: two were the sock slipping partially off during an especially active sleep stretch (a false reading rather than a real physiological event, and the app is honest that "sock off foot" is by far the most common alert type), and one was a genuinely elevated heart rate during a feverish night with a head cold, which tracked sensibly with how flushed and unsettled our baby actually was.
That false-alarm rate is worth being upfront about, because it is the single most common complaint about wearable infant monitors in general, not just this one. The charging base is small enough to leave permanently plugged in near the crib, and the nightly routine of clipping the sensor onto a fresh sock and setting it in the charger during diaper changes became second nature quickly. Who should actually buy this
We'd point this squarely at new parents with a specific reason for heightened anxiety about overnight breathing or oxygen issues — a history of apnea in the family, a NICU stay, reflux that causes breath-holding spells, or simply a first baby and a level of new-parent vigilance that a video monitor alone doesn't satisfy. For parents without that specific worry, a standard video/audio monitor is cheaper and arguably sufficient, and it's worth being honest that no major pediatric body currently recommends home pulse-ox monitoring as a substitute for safe sleep practices or a reduction in SIDS risk — Owlet itself is careful never to claim that. This is a comfort and information tool, not a replacement for following safe sleep guidelines.
Comparison to a standard video monitor
We ran the Owlet alongside a basic video monitor for the first month, mostly out of caution, and found the two serve genuinely different purposes rather than overlapping. The video monitor tells you what's happening — is the baby awake, crying, tangled in a blanket — while the Owlet tells you a physiological number that a camera simply cannot capture. Once we trusted the sock's alert reliability after the first few weeks, we relied on the camera less for pure vigilance and more for the practical stuff, like checking if a nap was truly over before walking down the hall.
Cost considerations
At full retail price, the Dream Sock sits well above a basic video monitor, and the optional Dream subscription for deeper sleep analytics adds an ongoing cost on top of that. Replacement socks (needed as your baby grows through sizes, and eventually needed again if the fabric wears out before your baby outgrows the age range) are a real recurring cost worth budgeting for, not a one-time purchase. We'd treat the base unit and two sock sizes as the real cost of entry, and consider the subscription and camera bundle genuinely optional rather than assuming you'll need them from day one.
The verdict
Ten weeks and one legitimately useful fever-night alert later, the Owlet Dream Sock earned a permanent spot in our nursery, but with clear eyes about what it is and isn't. It is an accurate, comfortable, low-friction physiological monitor that gave us real peace of mind during a period of new-parent anxiety that no camera could address. It is not a medical device, not a SIDS-prevention tool, and not something every family strictly needs. For parents with a genuine reason to want overnight heart rate and oxygen visibility, it delivers on that promise reliably; for parents without that specific need, the price and subscription costs are a harder sell against a plain video monitor.
