Return Policy Checklist: When a Coupon Deal Is Not Actually a Deal

A coupon can make a weak purchase look attractive. The problem appears later: final sale terms, short return windows, restocking fees, return shipping costs, or store-credit-only refunds can erase the value of the discount. This checklist helps shoppers judge the risk before entering a promo code.

Start with the return window

Look for the number of days, the event that starts the clock, and whether the policy changes for sale items. A 30-day return window from delivery is more useful than a 14-day window from order date when shipping takes a week.

Check final sale and excluded categories

Fashion, beauty, intimates, personalized products, clearance, digital goods, and opened electronics often have tighter rules. If the coupon only works on final sale items, treat the discount as a higher-risk purchase.

Know who pays return shipping

Return shipping can matter more than a small coupon. If the item is bulky, fragile, or size-sensitive, estimate the return cost before buying. A 10% code on a $60 item is not useful if a return label costs $9 and the fit is uncertain.

• Will returning part of the order remove the discount?
• Does the free shipping threshold still apply if you return one item?

Better buying routine

Use coupons aggressively for items you already know: repeat skincare, household goods, software renewals, or exact replacement products. Be more cautious with first-time apparel, furniture, refurbished electronics, and anything with a strict return policy.
